COVID-19 PREVENTION: How to Exercise Safely in a Pandemic

COVID-19 Prevention

The average American gained 7 to 9 pounds during the lockdown, which is why many of us are itching to get back to our pre-pandemic exercise routines. While home workouts are the safest solution, they’re not for everyone. We may miss our favorite classes, hitting the gym or playing sports with friends, but how safe are these activities? We know it’s essential to enjoy your workout so that you have a positive experience, so here are some COVID-19 prevention tips for a safe return to exercise.

Get Outdoors

Exercising outdoors is your next safest bet to at-home workouts, as long as you’re able to practice social distancing. Go for a walk, hike, bike ride, run—whatever gets your blood pumping and endorphins flowing. As soon as you get home, take off your shoes and running gear and disinfect them with Clear Gear athletic gear disinfectant. Pre-treat your clothing by spraying with Clear Gear too. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then launder.

Go Boutique

The next best bet is working out in a small, boutique studio environment where you are the only client or there is a limited number of people. Ask your trainer about the protocol and make sure the facility is disinfected properly in between clients. This means spraying with athletic gear disinfectant and allowing for proper “kill time,” which is 10 minutes. As soon as you go home, disinfect shoes, clothing and gear as described above and then shower immediately.

Exercise Caution at the Gym

Be extra careful at the middle-sized and larger gyms, where a larger number of people work out. Go during “off times” when your facility will be less crowded, like early morning, later in the morning or at night. Make sure you adhere to the precautions that are in place in terms of maintaining appropriate distances from others. Check with the staff to find out what measures they are taking. They should follow strict sanitation protocols and do deep cleanings regularly—ideally every day mid-day and at closing. Sweaty equipment is a breeding ground for dangerous germs—wipe down every piece of equipment you use both before and after using it. Wash your hands with soap thoroughly before and after your workout.
